Skyline or Gold Star?

Anyone who has been to Cincinnati surely has some knowledge of that city's version of Chili. There's always a rivalry between Skyline Chili and Gold Star Chili. They are both good, but IMHO Skyline is tops. Now that I make my own, and because I live 2500 odd miles from The Queen City, mine is best.

Whaddya say dd#2 and dear readers? Who's is the bestest?

It's our absolute favorite to take camping. We freeze in vacuum bags already cooked pasta and (separate) chili. Pop both boil bags in a large pot of water and then use that same water to wash the dishes!

Awww, what a sweet reply from your darling daughter. I lived in Cincinnati for four years, but don't think I've ever tried Gold Star. My best friend used to work at Skyline so she was kinda partial. And even though I did have access to the restaurant since then, I generally prefer to make my own, because my daughter doesn't like cinnamon in her meat. Mmmmm cinnamon.

O.K. What makes Cincinatti chili - "Cincinatti chili?" The spaghetti?

I eat vegetaraian chili... I grew up in Texas (on the hamburger variety) and there were chilis with beans or without...

clueless....

It's in the "secret recipe", lol. Just kidding. The recipe has cinnamon, and the taste isn't THAT wacky, but more folks are bothered by it being served over noodles and has shredded cheddar on top.

Descriptions are called:
2-way - Chili and spaghetti
3-way - Chili, spaghetti & cheese
4-way - Chili, spaghetti, cheese and either onions or beans (or both)

To make it just like the restaurant variety, I cook the ground beef, drain well, and put it in the food processor to make it really fine. Also, the tomatoes get pureed.

Chili over SPAGHETTI!!!!! A crime here in Texas where you ain't even supposed to put beans in it! But I do put beans in mine (and sometimes serve it over rice.) LOL!

I'm not sure I can wrap my mind around cinnamon in chili. But I do sprinkle onions on mine and ALWAYS grated cheese and a dollop of sour cream. And where you puree your meat and tomatoes I make mine extra chunky.

Different ways for different parts of the country. :-)

Chili with pasta? Unheard of up here...

Chili is best done with thick slices of freshly baked French stick, with lots of butter...

... and beer!!!

Hmmmm... makes you wonder why my rear is as big as it is!!

LOL

Skyline wins, hands down!

I have never had chili without spaghetti, but my parents are both from Ohio, so I guess that explains it? But never beans.

My little sister made chili for her DH's unit one time, sans beans. They didn't even know what it was. They thought it was some sort of hot sloppy joe meat.

Hate to rain on your parade but chili from Cinncinnati!? (Anybody ever seen that TV ad about piquante sauce from Neeww Yooork!?) Dear friends, chili comes from the Hispanic southwest!!! Here in Colorado we make our chili WITH beans; then top it with salsa, grated cheese, chopped onions and eat it with buttered flour tortillas.

I have to admit I do like Greek food with cinnamon in the meat. Oh well, to each his own. What we grew up on tastes best.

I just spent a week in the Cincinnati area and had chili from Skyline and Gold Star, oh and the Big Boy restaurant. I couldn't quite put my finger on the odd taste but today, I was thinking about it and said to my hubby...I beleive they put cinnamon in their chili...and low and behold I find this posting about the cinnamon. The spaghetti is weird enough..but cinnamon ??? Bless my Texas born heart....I just wanted plain chili, no 3,4 or 5 way..just cinnamonless chili....lol

I like them both, but did you know Gold Star uses MSG and Skyline does not? That makes Skyline my clear winner!

I grew up in Cincinnati (actually I still live here) I'm 20, and I had no idea how exclusive "Cincinnati Chili" was until maybe 5 years ago. I've had several kinds of Chili and there is just something amazing about a 3 way with some vinegar-y hot sauce. Wow, I'm hungry and I live like a 1 minute drive away from Goldstar :) I like all kinds of Chili though. I would love to see what some other cities have that are exclusively theirs. A 3 way, some cheesy garlic bread, and a large pepsi... omg.

Oh yeah, and something else that is AMAZING is Chili cheese dip, which is cream cheese, then your favorite cincy chili, then melted cheddar cheese. Serve with tortilla chips. Yummy :) It is served in the restaurants but I've made it for football games and the like.
